Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Seminar
August 31, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
This event is not sponsored by MemoryCare and is provided to you as a courtesy.
This workshop is offered to healthcare professionals interested in expanding their knowledge of dementia care, with a focus on utilizing behavioral approaches when possible. With dementia rates on the rise, there is an increasing demand for healthcare and administrative staff working with this population to have training specific to behavioral management and communication. After presenting the current definition of dementia (referred to as major neurocognitive disorder in the DSM-5), common etiologies will be discussed to provide participants with a better understanding of brain-behavior relationships associated with dementia. Specific nonpharmacological interventions will be discussed that may be beneficial in managing common behavioral disturbances in this population, including hallucinations/delusions, depression/anxiety, sundowning, apathy, screaming, sleep problems, wandering/pacing, physical aggression, self-injurious behavior, hoarding, resistiveness, and sexual disinhibition. Given the effects of dementia on communication, participants will also walk away with communication strategies that will likely facilitate a more productive and positive interaction between the care provider and the individual with dementia. Because not all behaviors are the direct result of the brain changes, the influence of comorbid conditions and environmental factors will be presented.
Additionally, those who complete this workshop can optionally pursue becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP(R)), through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP). For more information, visit the NCCDP website (www.nccdp.org).
NOTE: Registration must be received by August 20, 2020 so the participant’s workshop manual (included in the course fee) can be ordered in time.
